India’s Green Shield: Why Tree Plantation is Urgent Today
The Tree Plantation Drive initiated by Damooga Foundation is not just about planting saplings — it’s about restoring ecological balance and preparing India for a greener future. As the country faces the brunt of climate change through heatwaves, deforestation, and urban sprawl, the simple act of planting trees takes on powerful significance.
Trees are carbon sinks — they absorb CO₂ from the atmosphere, reduce greenhouse gas effects, and release oxygen that we breathe. Yet, India has lost vast forest cover in recent decades to infrastructure development and encroachment. This drive is a direct countermeasure to restore green cover in cities, rural landscapes, school campuses, and barren lands.
The Foundation collaborates with local panchayats, schools, and youth groups to not only plant native species but ensure their survival through maintenance cycles. Saplings are selected based on the region’s soil and climate — ensuring sustainable growth and impact. Community involvement is key, as tree ownership builds environmental consciousness from the ground up.
With more than 1 crore trees envisioned in this movement, this campaign is crucial in creating long-term climate resilience, reducing soil erosion, and bringing biodiversity back to depleted zones. It’s not just about planting a tree — it’s about planting hope for generations.
